"Il Castagno", an Italian restaurant that moved to the port town of Mochimune

exterior

The restaurant first opened in January 2005 as "Osteria Il Castagno" in Tomoe-cho, Aoi Ward. After 15 years in business, it moved to the small port town of Mochimune in August 2020 and reopened under the new name "Il Castagno".

Owner-chef Inami has experience training in Italy, moving from one restaurant to another as he liked. As his Italian cuisine is based on local cuisine, he makes use of the experience he gained in Italy while also visiting local producers in Shizuoka and listening to their thoughts as he thoroughly explores the selection of ingredients.

One of the charms of Castagno is the menu that sources unique ingredients from local producers of Mochimune, such as shirasu (whitebait), other fish caught in Mochimune port, and local vegetables. Homemade ravioli and breaded shiitake mushrooms from Fujieda are also excellent dishes that bring out the best in the quality of the ingredients. After your meal, please enjoy a homemade dessert made by the chef's wife.

The importance of enjoying meals with the person in front of you

Castagno's menu is only a la carte, with a daily menu for both lunch and dinner. They do not advertise lunch sets or chef's recommendations, because they want customers to take their time choosing the menu and talking with their dining companions.

With the spread of social media, Inami-san feels a little sad that there are more and more customers who are using their smartphones to talk to "someone who is not here" and send photos while eating. At Castagno, he would be happy if you could spend time enjoying conversation and time with your dining companions.

"For those who want to enjoy alcohol, we also have Italian wine and local beer from Mochimune. You can each order your favorite dishes, or you can order a variety of dishes and share with your companions. Enjoy what you like, however you like."

Why not take a break from your busy daily life and enjoy a leisurely meal at Castagno?

A store with the atmosphere of Taisho era history

Set in a renovated Taisho-era home, Castagno offers a beautiful space where the charm of old materials, like traditional fittings repurposed as partitions, blends seamlessly with the meticulous craftsmanship of new additions.

'We wanted to create a space where people could enjoy not just good food, but the whole dining experience,' says Mr. Inami. He personally took part in the renovation process, helping with tasks like plastering walls, laying tiles, and crafting fittings.

Inside, the open kitchen adds a dynamic touch, with the sounds of sizzling oil and clattering pans creating a lively ambiance. From outside, the chirping of wild birds native to the lush surroundings of Mochimune adds another layer of charm, making even the waiting time feel indulgent.

The historical beams and pillars, walls and fittings that have been reborn across eras, and the fusion of interior design with nature all come together to make Castagno unique. The carefully curated interior reflects the timeless beauty of old materials, offering a warmth and character that new elements alone could never replicate. Be sure to take in the thoughtfully designed atmosphere as part of the experience.

Message from Il Castagno

Finally, we received a message from Mr.Inami:

"I believe a meal begins the moment you leave your house. Park your car, take a leisurely stroll along Mochimune's seaside, or stop by a shirasu shop to pick up some souvenirs after your meal. I see the entire journey, right up until you get back home, as part of the dining experience. So, I hope you'll fully enjoy everything Mochimune has to offer during that time."
