About a 3-minute walk from JR Mochimune Station, in a residential area, is a taiyaki and coffee shop called "Taiyaki Coffee". This shop, which opened in November 2022, is run by the owner, Tsutsumi-san, and her mother, working together as a team.

Previously, Tsutsumi-san's family ran a supermarket in Mochimune, and her mother sold taiyaki at the storefront. Perhaps influenced by this, Tsutsumi-san developed a deep love for red bean paste, to the point where she dreamed of "swimming in a sea of red bean paste"! Fulfilling her dream of cooking red bean paste in a large pot, she opened her own taiyaki shop.

In addition to taiyaki, the shop also features fresh vegetables that Tsutsumi-san personally sources from farmers in the Orido area of Shimizu Ward. Items like tomatoes, mandarins, radishes, and edamame are known for their exceptional freshness and are offered at very reasonable prices, earning praise from locals. On the day of our visit, vegetables such as daikon, turnips, and green onions were being sold for just 100 yen each. Many customers stopped by to pick up some veggies while buying taiyaki.

The Special Touch of Taiyaki Coffee

taiyaki

The taiyaki at Taiyaki Coffee is a masterpiece crafted with meticulous attention to both the dough and the red bean paste. After trying various types of azuki beans, they chose beans from Masui Shigeru Store, cooking them daily with care. Inspired by the kind of red bean paste a grandmother in the countryside might make, they add a touch of salt to create a perfectly balanced flavor.

The flour used for the dough was carefully selected after requesting countless samples, much to the supplier's surprise, and choosing the one deemed the most delicious. The result is a taiyaki with a crispy exterior and a delightfully chewy interior--a texture rarely found at other taiyaki shops. Be sure to try Taiyaki Coffee's meticulously crafted taiyaki!

The taiyaki you purchase can be enjoyed on the veranda on the first floor or in the cozy café space on the second floor of the building. Some of the wood used in the second-floor café, such as the hallway and beams, has been preserved from the original construction 70 years ago. Take a moment to appreciate the history of this charming building while enjoying your time there!

Perfectly paired with red bean paste! Coffee brewed from freshly ground beans.

The coffee served at Taiyaki Coffee is made using beans from Gordon Coffee, a roastery located in Oguro, Suruga Ward, Shizuoka City. Beans are ground to order, ensuring a fresh and aromatic cup every time.

Understanding that coffee preferences vary, the shop uses the Morning Blend, a balanced option that appeals to a wide range of tastes. For iced coffee, althought the brew may appear slightly stronger, yet it remains light and easy to drink.

Surprisingly, red bean paste and coffee make an excellent pairing. Be sure to enjoy a cup of freshly brewed coffee alongside your taiyaki!

The rapidly growing favorite: Taiyaki Ice Cream!

ice cream

One of the most talked-about menu items right now is the Taiyaki Ice Cream--a decadent treat featuring taiyaki shells filled with red bean paste and vanilla ice cream! The shells are thinner than regular taiyaki, creating a crispy texture that perfectly complements the creamy vanilla ice cream and sweet red bean paste. The contrast of flavors and textures is simply delightful! Just be careful as the ice cream melts quickly, so enjoy it before it drips. A must-try dessert for anyone with a sweet tooth!

Enjoy homemade miso! Miso Dengaku is available.

dengaku

After something sweet, you often crave something salty, right? In such moments, we recommend Miso Dengaku, which you can enjoy with homemade miso. To create a perfect contrast with the sweetness of the red bean paste in Taiyaki, the homemade miso is made slightly saltier. Enjoy the contrast between the sweetness of the red bean paste and the savory flavor of the miso. If you alternate between the two, you'll find it hard to stop eating!
